This park is located in the small town of Petersham, at the East Branch of the Swift River, and it's a hidden gem worth discovering this fall.

You can take one of several trails to explore the Swift River Reservation. The Red Loop is 1.4 miles, runs past the Williams Homestead Ruins, through the Harvard Forest, and eventually leads to a scenic vista. Take the 0.7-mile Blue Loop, which also leads hikers past the Homestead, but then veers off into the Slab City Tract along grassy paths, past old cellar holes, and to a portion of the Swift River. Another trail veers off to a view of granite outcroppings quarried from here, which is why this tract is called "Slab City."

When you get to the Swift River, you'll notice Hemlock and pine growing along its banks. Intermixed with these are various hardwood trees. Visiting the Swift River Reservation can provide a colorful show during peak fall foliage, whether down by the river or in the woods.

The Yellow Trail is the longest at three miles, and allows hikers to explore the Nichewaug Tract with a varied landscape, including a ravine, rocky ledges, fields, a swamp, and access to the river. You'll also get to the forest's edge to a path leading to an overlook with valley views. The panoramic vista with fall foliage dotting the landscape is outstanding!

Because this park in Petersham has such a varied landscape, a variety of wildlife call it home. You should keep your eyes peeled for deer, porcupine, raccoon, beaver, bobcat, and coyote.
