Massachusetts’ Mount Greylock Is One Of The Best Hiking Summits for Viewing Multiple States

Mount Greylock offers some of the best views in New England, allowing hikers to see into five different states from its summit.

One of the best parts of hiking up a tall mountain is the spectacular view at the summit. However, not all peaks let you gaze into several states at once.

Mount Greylock in Massachusetts is one of the most scenic hikes in the state and will allow you to survey vast swathes of New England at once. Here’s what you need to know.

Mount Greylock is a majestic mountain in near Adams that offers some of the best views in New England. It’s the tallest mountain in the state and one of Massachusetts’ most iconic natural features.

Hiking to the summit can be done via a number of different trails. If you’re looking for a challenge, try Bellows Pipe and Thunderbolt Trail (5.1 miles).

Feel like something more slightly easier? Try the Cheshire Harbor trail (6.2 miles). No matter which trail you choose, you’ll be climbing a 3,489-foot mountain. Be prepared to take breaks and pace yourself.

Once you reach the peak, you’ll be breathless in the best way possible. This sky-high vantage point allows you to see into five different states: Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

You’ll be able to see for 72 miles in every direction. Some might argue that’s a better view than you’d get on a plane.

It’s hard to miss the striking Veteran’s War Memorial Tower at the summit. It looks like something out of a fantasy film, but it’s actually a marker honoring all those who have given their lives in defense of the nation.

If you stay into the evening (we don’t recommend doing this unless you have driven to the summit), you’ll be treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets in the state.
