Sure, it’s easy enough to drive around Massachusetts and admire the fall foliage, but a road trip isn’t quite the same as being in and amongst the beautiful leaves. This trail in Carlisle is one of the best ways to experience the glory of the season and breathe in the crisp fall air.
This wonderful trail will take you through two awesome attractions: Great Brook Farm State Park and the Carlisle Cranberry Bog. The journey is about 5.2 miles round-trip and an absolutely heavenly way to spend a clear autumn day.
Great Brook Farm State Park is about 25 miles from Boston and features 1,000 acres of stunning natural scenery. There are 20 miles of paths to explore right in the state park and all are great for admiring the changing leaves. The park is dotted with meadows, woods, and farmland. Once you’ve enjoyed all the farm has to offer, hop on the trail and head about 1.5 miles away to the Carlisle Cranberry Bog.
A walk around a New England cranberry bog is about as autumnal as it gets. The trail will take you from the farm via a dedicated path that uses Curve Street as a connection. This street is a quiet, country road with scenic views, though it does not have a sidewalk so you’ll have to stick to the edge of the road and walk opposite traffic. Once you’re at the cranberry bog, you’ll have the opportunity to follow the main trail over the dike and enjoy fantastically colorful views of the cranberries and surrounding trees.
The best time to explore this trail is early- to mid-October. That’s when you’ll have the best chance of seeing the fall foliage at its absolute prettiest. If you want to see the cranberry harvest at the bog, you’ll need to tackle the trail between mid- and late October. There’s parking available at both Great Brook Farm and the bog.
You can find Great Brook Farm State Park at 165 North Rd, Carlisle, Mass. Click here to see trail spot on a map and plan your route. For more of the best fall foliage in the state, check out these scenic country roads that are perfect for an autumn drive.
