The Massive Massachusetts Blizzard Of February 1978 Will Never Be Forgotten
The Blizzard of '78 was a catastrophic storm in Massachusetts, remembered as the largest blizzard in the state's history.
The Blizzard of '78 was the storm of a generation. It was an enormous, catastrophic storm that has been the measuring stick for every major blizzard since. In fact, it went down as the largest blizzard in Massachusetts history! The damage was so bad, the National Guard was even called in. The thought of wintertime may chill you to the core, but this chilly event will (hopefully) never be repeated.
The first flakes started falling in Massachusetts on the afternoon of February 6.
Many employees were sent home early, but thousands more were caught by the storm during evening commute.
Some people didn’t make it home for several days, and communication was made difficult by downed power lines.
This storm dumped a record-breaking amount of snow on Massachusetts. Boston was smothered under 27.1 inches of snow, and nearly all businesses closed for days.
The blizzard killed around 100 people and injured over 4,500.
Still, many people have fond memories of playing in the massive snow drifts.
This is one blizzard that Massachusetts will never forget.
