Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Massachusetts That’s Perfect for Summer
Looking for a way to cool off after a summer hike? Head to Lowell Holly Reservation near Sandwich and experience the best of both worlds.
Summer days in Massachusetts are all about getting outside and enjoying the few months of warm weather that come our way this time of year. With so much outdoor fun at our fingertips, it’s often hard to decide which outdoor activities to participate in. If you are like me and find yourself choosing between spending the day hiking in the woods or cooling off in the water, you will be delighted to find out that there is a fantastic Cape Cod hiking trail that offers the best of both worlds. Head over to the Lowell Holly Reservation and be sure to bring both your hiking boots and your bathing suit.
The Lowell Holly Reservation is a scenic 135-acre property that is located between the towns of Sandwich and Mashpee. Currently managed by the Trustees of Reservation, the property was named for Abbott Lawrence Lowell, who donated the land. The reservation features old carriage route trails, native American holly trees, and peaceful water views.
This picturesque Lowell Holly Reservation Trail is the most popular trail within the reservation, and it is absolutely perfect for a summertime hike. The route is an easy 2.5-mile loop, just the right distance to get some exercise without overdoing it in the heat. If you walk without stopping, you can complete the trail in less than an hour, but with a hike as pretty as this one, you will probably want to take some time to pause and enjoy the scenery.
Just park at the trailhead and follow the route. The trail is well marked, but watch your footing, because several exposed roots can make parts of the hike a little tricky. Be sure to bring your binoculars, because you will encounter some scenic sights, including two lovely ponds (Mashpee and Wakeby).
The lovely trail offers several shaded areas, and best of all, sandy beaches where you can cool off with a swim. Please note that there are no lifeguards at these beaches, so swimming is at your own risk. Even if you don’t take a dip, these are wonderful spots to sit back and enjoy the waterfront views.
The area is a prime spot for birdwatching, and you might also see some other small wildlife. If you are lucky, you may even spot some majestic swans swimming in the water. Be on the lookout for gorgeous rhododendrons, painted rocks, and breathtaking sunsets.
The Lowell Holly Reservation Trail is open year-round and is worth a return visit throughout the changing seasons. Autumn is an especially magical time here. Feel free to bring your well-behaved dogs with you, but be sure to keep them on a leash.
