There is no shortage of scenic hikes in MD. We're also fortunate that there are a handful of gorgeous waterfalls in Maryland as well, but the following spot seems to be everyone's favorite (and for good reason). Swallow Falls State Park has not one, but two grand waterfalls that are connected by a short and scenic hiking trail. We recommend the hike to Muddy Creek Falls and Swallow Falls at least once, but you may want to experience it throughout the seasons - especially in autumn! Hop on the Swallow Falls Canyon Trail for a scenic waterfall hike near Oakland, Maryland, and enjoy the phenomenal natural beauty of the Old Line State.
Swallow Falls State Park is one of Western Maryland's best attractions, offering big sights for little effort.
The Swallow Falls Canyon Trail is no exception.
Muddy Creek Falls is a short walk from the parking lot. The views here can be enjoyed by anyone, young or old.
You can even climb the stairs to the top of the falls and admire the view down below. Step back down the stairs and start on a short 1-1/4-mile journey to your next beautiful destination.
If you really appreciate hiking trails in Maryland, especially those with beautiful destinations, you'll love this path. It follows along the Youghiogheny River and is lined by beautiful trees and rock formations.
Some parts can get a bit bumpy so take your time. This is one of the prettiest waterfall hikes in Maryland, and all that beauty can take some effort to reach!
The dense forest surroundings are absolutely stunning when the sunlight filters through the leaves.
And there's plenty of history to showcase too!
Along the way you'll spot tiny rapids and falls, along with fun rock formations, keeping the sights interesting and ever-changing.
Finally, you'll approach Swallow Falls. These falls are smaller than the previous Muddy Creek Falls, but they're quite impressive up close.
Stand atop Swallow Falls and take in the breathtaking views downriver.
Or when the falls are calm enough, some opt to slide down them on a fun ride only nature can provide. Others enjoy wading in the cool waters during summer. Just be safe - those rocks are slippery.
The trail connecting Muddy Creek Falls and Swallow Falls is short but definitely sweet. It's rare to experience so much natural beauty in one easy trek. If you've got a Maryland bucket list, put this on it!
Fall just takes it to a whole new level. Enjoy!
