This Suburban Maryland Lake And Trail Is One Of The Best Places To View Summer Wildflowers
Wilde Lake in Columbia, Maryland, is a prime spot for viewing summer wildflowers and enjoying nature.
Originally built in the late 1960s, Wilde Lake has been a point of pride in Columbia, Maryland for several decades now. It’s an idyllic 22-acre waterfront surrounded by some gorgeous homes, teeming with beautiful wildlife, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from the Lakefront Plaza Stage. But somehow, one of the best-kept secrets about Wilde Lake is that it is one of the best places in Maryland to view the blooming summer wildflowers. A leisurely stroll around the lake path loop will take you on a journey through the vibrant colors that grace our state every year when the weather turns warm, complete with the refreshing scent of lakeside air that is sure to reset your day and put your mind at ease.
The lake is hidden behind a particularly scenic dam, and here at the base of it, a meadow of wildflowers blooms rampant. There are spots to set up for a picnic nearby, so don’t be shy about bringing along a blanket and a basket!
The scarlet bee balm and the blue cornflowers are particularly noticeable, and you can set up here and watch the local pollinators hard at work buzzing from one flower to another.
Of course, no viewing of Maryland wildflowers would be complete without the iconic Black-eyed Susans. These little pops of sunshine are our state flower, and for good reason.
Along the banks of the lake, you’ll find the Turk’s cap lilies in full swing, a refreshing and fiery sight when the light sneaks through and catches them.
Wilde Lake is also currently home to about 15 green herons! These birds have a very distinct call, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of them on their perches by the water.
There are a couple of places where you can choose to wander off the paved pathway and into the loamy, shaded woods if you prefer.
Standing on the dam grants you a serene vista of the lake. There are spots to launch kayaks in along the path, which on a day like this could make you feel like you were rowing through the sky.
