For an unforgettable day in nature, surrounded by history and natural beauty, look no further than Gathland State Park.
You'll find this special natural area and historic preserve on South Mountain just outside of Burkittsville.
The park, which opened in 1949, includes the former estate of a Civil War correspondent by the name of George Alfred Townsend (nicknamed "Gath").
One of the few remaining structures of the estate is the War Correspondents Memorial Arch, which also happens to lie just along the Appalachian Trail.
The monument, completed in 1896, is the first of its kind in the world dedicated to journalists who were killed in war.
Those visiting the park looking for fun things to do will definitely want to hike at least a portion of this renowned trek, which stretches from Georgia to Maine.
For a deeper dive into history, you can plan to visit during the park's living history weekends, which include Civil War encampments and demonstrations of life in the 19th century.
From the lovely scenery to the historic attractions, there really is so much to discover at this impressive Maryland state park.
