There's so much natural beauty to be discovered in Maryland that sometimes, it's easy to overlook the manmade marvels of the Old Line State. Today, we're headed to a destination that's abundant in both categories. Patapsco Valley State Park can be found in central Maryland, in Howard County's small town of Elkridge. With no fewer than 16,000 acres, this beloved park is home to wildlife, beautiful riverfront scenery, and perhaps the most enchanting swinging bridge in Maryland.
Welcome to the breathtaking Patapsco Valley State Park!
Hugging 32 miles of the Patapsco River, this massive state park is over 16,000 acres in size and is marked by wildlife, natural beauty, and endless recreational opportunities.
Many who visit the park enjoy fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback riding, and bike riding.
Of course, the most popular activity of all is hiking. The park is home to no fewer than 200 miles of trails, 70 of which are well-maintained and frequently used.
A popular hike for those looking to experience one of the park's most noteworthy features -- the swinging bridge -- is known as the Grist Mill Trail.
The trail is approximately 5 miles in length and is part of a multi-use trail system. A significant portion of this trail is also paved.
In fact, there are actually two swinging bridges along this trail, both of which offer stunning views of the surrounding park.
The newer bridge was completed in 2006 and is located along the Grist Mill Trail in the Avalon area.
