Some of these scenic spots are located in the quieter corners of the state, with both natural and man-made rivers. Regardless of which you choose, you're in for a day of fun under the sun. 1. Antietam Creek, Boonsboro

Antietam Creek is a tributary of the Potomac River, and at 41.7 miles long, it winds its way through western Maryland and Pennsylvania. For the Maryland portion, there's an access point at Devil's Backbone County Park along Antietam Creek. You'll be floating by historical battle sites where the army fought along the river, stone bridges, and old farmhouses. Or, you can join a historic floating tour, led by a guide who will teach you more about the history of the area.

2. Gunpowder Falls State Park, Middle River

Did you know you can go tubing at Gunpowder Falls State Park? If you have your own tube, you can bring that to the park and launch on the Gunpowder River. If not, offering 90-minute and three-hour tube rentals, Monkton Bike Rental Inc. (located near the park) is ideal for those seeking a relaxing and beautiful adventure. This lazy river is great for little kids because the water is shallow, and you can even rent smaller tubes for them. Let your worries float away on the Big Gunpowder River, flowing as the cool water carries you along on a hot summer day. In addition to renting a tube, you can also rent a bike for a day of outdoor fun! After your float, you can hike the trails at the park or have a picnic lunch, turning this into a day-long summer activity in Maryland.

3. Sun Outdoors Frontier Town, Berlin

If man-made lazy rivers are more your speed, check out Sun Outdoors Frontier Town and Campground in Berlin. This spot boasts dozens of fun outdoor activities in Maryland, but the lazy river at its water park is among the most relaxing. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the lazy river is buzzing with tons of people drifting along in transparent swim tubes. Don't expect a rustic river setting, after all, it's a man-made river. The vibes at the water park will be energetic with slides, splash pads, and pools. If you're staying at the campground, you'll even have access to the water park for free. Otherwise, a day pass is $30 for kids and $35 for adults.

4. Deer Creek, Woodbine

If you already have a tube, create your own rustic floating adventure at Deer Creek in Harford County. There are several starting points from which you can begin your journey, which can last two hours or more, depending on the water conditions. A popular spot to put in is the Benjamin's Bridge Canoe/Kayak Launch. The water is typically clear, where you can see the bottom, and the flow is steady, making for a low-key day on the water. Be on the lookout for some rocky sections that will keep you alert as you drift. Although the deepest part of the creek measures four feet, be careful and avoid going during or after heavy rain.

5. Eden Mill Park, Pylesville

You’ll find locals floating on the Eden Mill Park in northern Maryland. The creek flows slowly, allowing you to relax and gently drift on the water. Along the way, you’ll be covered by tree canopy, and there are lots of wildlife to watch for, including deer, raccoons, beavers, and otters that will keep you present and engaged while you drift. This is a four-mile paddle trail that extends into rapids as you get closer to Rocks State Park. That said, tubers will have no issues getting out of the water since there are multiple put-in spots. You’ll just need to make sure you arrange for a ride, since this is not a park where you’ll find outfitters with shuttle service. The park has a historic mill, hiking trails, and picnic areas, so you can spend a full summer day here.  

6. Patapsco River, near Baltimore

The Patapsco River spans several counties, and the most beautiful spot to view it is at Patapsco Valley State Park. Bring your own tube or rent one from River Tubing Rentals, a nearby outfitter, and enjoy the ride. It costs $25 for the tubes, and there is a $35 security deposit for any incidentals. Be sure to return the tube by 5:30 p.m. You can start at one of several access points to the river, but the best stretch is along Daniel's to Pickall and the Avalon areas. Avoid going after heavy rain because the water can get pretty murky. Get to the park early, as the parking lots fill up in the summer months.
