This Easy Hike In Maryland Is Loaded With Civil War History

Hiking season is finally here and there are hundreds of trails to explore in the Old Line State. Ditch the crowds and explore historic ruins at the underrated Fort Foote Park. Read on to learn more about this little known but fascinating spot that will take you back in time.

Fort Foote Park is a hidden gem located in the town of Fort Washington, overlooking the Potomac River.

Built in 1863, Fort Foote was constructed as an extra defense for the Washington DC area.

And today, remnants of the historic fort remain. This includes Rodman Cannons and old bunkers.

Hike the easy 1.7-mile loop that includes tidbits of history along the way.

Much of this tree-lined trail is shaded and springtime is especially beautiful as wildflowers dot the surroundings.

The water views are particularly picturesque and you can even see the National Harbor from this spot. Bring a picnic and take in the sights.

This little known park is worth visiting at least once, especially for lovers of history. Check it out for a unique day trip.
