Have you ever visited Patapsco Valley State Park? This park, in Ellicott City, is easily accessible from Baltimore. It's longer than it is wide because it runs 32 miles along the Patapsco River and covers over 14,000 acres of land. In fact, it's Maryland's largest state park.
Because of the size and length of this park, there are quite a few long trails within it. One that is especially beautiful and popular is the Patapsco Valley Ridge Trail, which takes hikers through the woods and along the river. Even though Patapsco Valley State Park is in a populated part of the state, you'll feel like you're a million miles from everything when you take on this exceptional hike.
The Patapsco Valley Trail is a 6.3-mile out-and-back trail. You'll have to return the same way you came to get to your car at the end, unless you have someone pick you up before turning back. This hike is not particularly challenging, except for its length. It's rated moderate by most hikers, and you'll only gain 731 feet of elevation along the way. This means this hike is family-friendly. There are lots of ups and downs on this trail, but they're manageable—although some are a bit steep. Dogs are welcome on this trail, too, as long as you keep yours on a leash.
As you follow this trail, you'll see lots of beautiful things like wildflowers, trees, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. The scenery here is incredible. The path can become narrow in places, so be aware of this and also be alert for bicyclists who share the trail.
There are many peaceful places to stop along this trail for a rest. Consider bringing a picnic lunch along with you to enjoy at the halfway point. Cascade Falls can be viewed from this trail. It's one of the most popular destinations within Patapsco Valley State Park. Be sure to plan on spending some time near it during your adventure. The sound of water pouring over the rocks is relaxing and serene.
The Patapsco Valley Ridge Trail is one of Maryland's best hiking trails by anyone's standards. You're sure to enjoy a day on this trail the first time you do it, and you may even choose to return to it in each season for a different perspective. Have a great hike—Marylanders are so lucky to have a trail like this one.
