Beat the Winter Blues with a Trip to This Magical Maryland State Park
Discover Rocky Gap State Park, one of the best winter getaways in Maryland. Enjoy snowy trails, cozy cabins, and the beautiful Lake Habeeb this season.
Rocky Gap State Park is hands down one of the best winter getaways in Maryland. Tucked away in the Allegheny Mountains near Cumberland, this 3,000-acre park is surrounded by towering trees, rolling hills, and the sparkling Lake Habeeb. What I love about this place is that it’s not just about the views - there are peaceful trails, cozy cabins, and plenty of fun things to do to help you shake off those winter blues.
Rocky Gap State Park has a rich history. Established in the 1960s and officially opened in 1974, it was created to provide more opportunities for outdoor recreation and preserve the natural beauty of the Allegheny Mountains. The park’s crown jewel, 243-acre Lake Habeeb, is named after Edward Habeeb, a local businessman who supported the project. Over the years, Rocky Gap has become a beloved destination, and while it’s popular year-round, there’s something extra special about visiting in winter when snow blankets the trails and the summer crowds are nowhere to be found.
The park has a lot to offer no matter what your interests. If you want to stay active, the trails are great for winter hikes, especially the Lakeside Loop Trail. It circles Lake Habeeb, crosses over bridges, and winds through the woods.
For something a bit more challenging, Evitts Ridge Trail takes you to higher ground with amazing views of the lake and mountains. It’s breathtaking when covered in snow.
And don’t miss out on ice fishing at Lake Habeeb. The park allows ice fishing in designated areas, where you can catch species like yellow perch and bluegill. Just be sure the ice is thick enough to stand on. It’s a peaceful way to embrace the winter, with opportunities to spot wildlife like eagles and deer while you wait for a bite.
After a day of outdoor adventure, the park’s accommodations provide a cozy place to relax. The rustic mini cabins are simple, yet comfortable, with a full-size bed, bunk beds, and electricity. Picture yourself curled up in a warm blanket, enjoying the peace and quiet, or watching the snow fall outside. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and recharge before heading back out for more fun.
Not into cabins? The Rocky Gap Casino Resort is right inside the park. Try your luck at the casino, enjoy a delicious meal, or indulge in a spa treatment - the resort has everything you need to cap off your day.
If you're seeking a memorable winter getaway in Maryland, Rocky Gap State Park is where you want to be. Whether you're hiking snowy trails, ice fishing on Lake Habeeb, or just spending the night in one of the cozy cabins, there’s no better place to escape the winter blues.
