The Sapphire Natural Pool In Maine That’s Devastatingly Gorgeous
Rattlesnake Pool in Evans Notch, Maine, offers a unique hiking experience with its strikingly blue water and natural beauty.
Maine has plenty of natural attractions for people who love the outdoors. Many are exactly what you'd expect - a beautiful forest located in northern Maine, a coastal trail that takes you through the best of what the Maine shore has to offer. But, sometimes, we come across something in nature that feels as though it's been put in the wrong spot. This incredible pool is a perfect example. Read on for the details of Rattlesnake Pool in Evans Notch!
Located in Evans Notch, Rattlesnake Pool has the bluest water in the state and can be found after a fun hike.
To get to the area, make your way to Route 113 in Gilead. Then head towards Stone House Road, which eventually becomes Shell Pond Road. After a few miles, you'll find a gated area for parking. From here, head to the large clearing. Walk through the clearing (while watching for ticks in the summer!) and you'll eventually come to a marked trailhead.
This area is private land, so you'll want to be careful to be as mindful as possible. Though the owners have granted access to the public, it's best to practice respectful hiking and leave no trace as you make your way along.
Once you've hit the trailhead, continue for about another half a mile and you'll see a sign for Stone House Trail.
Make a left here and continue for another half mile until you come to a small footbridge on your right.
After continuing about another half mile, you'll find the path to Rattlesnake Flume and Pool.
This trail is marked by a small arrow on the right.
The pool is hidden away, but once you're there it feels like a large oasis.
You can slide down the falls...
...or jump from the rocks.
But, be prepared! The pool is fed by an underground spring making the water VERY cold even in the middle of the summer.
At the end of the day, you can go back to your car the same way you came. It should be about 2.5 miles round trip.
