When it comes to enjoying the summer in Maine, there are a dizzying array of options. And between the beach, lakes and rivers it's not hard to find a way to cool down when the mercury starts getting higher. If you live near the coast, you can always head east. But, getting to a sandy beach isn't quite as easy if you're looking for something inland. That's why we love swimming holes. This is can be accessed by an easy hike and the journey is almost as good as the splash down!
The Cataracts Falls is one of the most lovely waterfalls in the state, but it also offers one of the best opportunities for a refreshing swim. Head to Oxford County to find it.
You'll start with a short 1-mile hike that follows the Frye Brook in the Mahoosuc Public Reserved Land.
To find the trailhead head to the bridge where East B Hill Road goes across Frye Brook. From here, the trail runs along the east side of the brook.
While a bit rocky, the trail is well marked. And your first opportunity to swim will come with the smaller pool at the end of the formal trail.
To access the larger one, head back down.
Be sure to be careful as this area can often be quite wet and slippery.
You'll be able to see the Frye Brook all along the trail, so there's not much chance of missing the swimming hole.
If you can tear yourself away from the view, the pool itself is cool and refreshing.
And with lots of rocks and trees surrounding the area, you'll feel like you've found a hidden secret spot.
This is one of the most popular hikes in the area, so show up early if you want to have the largest chance of being on your own.
But, whether you're alone or with others you'll love how refreshing and clean this little slice of paradise in Maine feels.
The Cataracts are located in North Oxford. Address: North Oxford, ME 04261.
