For two stunning miles between Sand Beach and Otter Cliff in Acadia National Park, visitors can walk Ocean Path and experience some of the most spellbinding views in Maine. Every walk down this winding path is a new experience. Tides and currents ebb and flow and the weather brings a new background to this picturesque stroll each time.
The trail is a mix of concrete and packed gravel surfaces making for a fairly easy hike. Along the way you'll spot outlets where you can explore in more detail.
One of the great beauties of this hike is the juxtaposition of terrain styles. You’ll observe sand and beach along with rocky ledges and pines leading into a vast forest. The Ocean Path is like walking through several different states at once, experiencing all that diverse natural beauty in one outing.
Many previous hikers have recommended this trail for families, even if you don't trek the full 4.5 miles round trip.
In between Sand Beach and Otter Cliff you'll come across Thunder Hole, a coastal inlet where crashing waves making a booming sound like a thunder storm. This is a great bonus site to visit. You can walk down the stairs and experience the sonic phenomenon up close (if you don’t mind getting a little wet).
Strolling along this trail, each viewpoint is more stunning than the next. This hike is an ideal introduction to the natural wonders in Acadia National Park.
Furry friends are welcome to join you on the trail as long as they remain on a leash. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset and Acadia rangers recommend visiting outside of peak hours when the trail can become very crowded.
