The Hiking Trail Hiding In Maine That Will Transport You To Another World
Discover the hidden gem of Fore River Sanctuary near Portland, Maine, featuring scenic trails and the only waterfall of its size in the area.
Maine has lots of hiking trails and we must admit that they're all pretty great. But, some have something extra that takes it from a trail to a magical trip reminding us why we all spend our days in Vacationland. This tried and true Maine favorite might seem obvious to some, but you'd be surprised how often it's overlooked for some of the larger hiking systems. One of the reasons it's hidden? It's located so close to Portland that people don't expect it! But, we think you'll agree that it's one of the best in the state!
The hike is located within The Fore River Sanctuary, just outside of Portland.
The sanctuary is about 85 acres located surprisingly close to Congress Street! This is where the Fore River meets the ocean, creating a marshy landscape with lots of wildlife.
The entire network of trails is almost 6 miles.
To start the hike you can park in a few different areas. Choose from: Frost Street parking in the designated spaces behind Maine Orthopaedic Center, at the end Rowe Avenue, at Hillcrest Avenue or across from the Westbrook Street trail head.
We recommend starting at the South entrance by parking behind Maine Orthopaedic Center.
From here, you'll head along a very flat trail until you reach the bridge, leading towards the wetland portion of the hike.
From here, you'll find yourself immersed in a beautiful forest area.
This is where you'll encounter the small loop that leads to Jewell Falls.
Here you'll reach the falls, which are about 30 feet tall and best experience between spring and early summer.
For those who'd like to stay awhile, there's a bench right here to sit and enjoy!
This is a short trip, but one that leads to a really special place - it's the only waterfall of its size in the Greater Portland area!
Most areas of the sanctuary allow dogs as long as the owner is responsible. If you's prefer to enjoy the area in other ways, mountain biking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are all permitted as well!
To access the parking mentioned in this article, head to The Maine Orthopaedic Center located at 1601 Congress Street, Portland. For more information about The Fore River Sanctuary click here.
