The Hike To This Gorgeous Maine Swimming Hole Is Everything You Could Imagine
Hike to Tumbledown Mountain in Maine for a rewarding swim in a summit pond.
When the weather becomes warm, one of our favorite activities is to hike to a swimming hole in Maine. It combines the best of all Maine worlds — great trails and even better lakes and ponds. The trail we're telling you about today is fun and it offers a great way to build up a sweat. Then, when you're nice and hot, you'll love the chance to jump in the pond located at the summit. This hike leads to one of Maine's best swimming holes.
With some uphill terrain, Tumbledown Mountain can be a fairly ambitious hike. But if you're up for it, the prize at the end is well worth the effort.
We recommend taking the Brook Trail, which is just under 2 miles and slightly more accessible. The parking lot for this trail will be the first that you come to when heading into the area from Weld. The trailhead is to the right of the lot.
You'll start by walking along an old logging road for about one mile. Soon after, you'll cross over Tumbledown Brook, make a right, and the route will begin following the water.
At this point, you'll be close to the summit. Another trail will join with yours and you'll know you're nearly there!
After a whole lot of sweating, you'll have arrived at one of the most unique bodies of water in the state.
This summit pond is the perfect place to enjoy a dip.
And you'll definitely be ready for the cool water if you tackle this trail on a sunny day.
Expect the water to be cold, but you can also expect that it'll be exactly what you want. There are lots of swimming holes in Maine, but this one is extra special.
Spend some time here with snacks or a lunch and then head back to the parking lot the same way you came.
The good news is this part is a lot easier! You can see why this is considered to be one of the best swimming holes in Maine.
You'll find the trailhead at the following address: Byron Road, unincorporated Township 6, Maine. This is north of Weld and fairly easy to find on a map.
