Explore The Fall Colors Of Maine’s Beautiful Mackworth Island In Under 2 Miles With This Easy Hike

Mackworth Island in Maine offers a scenic 1.5-mile loop trail with forest and bay views, perfect for year-round outdoor exploration.

Every season is beautiful in Maine, but fall might be a favorite. As we head further into the season our priority is making the most of chillier temps and beautiful views. That means hikes and walks and exploration in the great outdoors of Maine. But, like we always say, you don't need to break a sweat to consider yourself an avid outdoors lover here. It's just as great to go on a walk in the woods. Head to Mackworth Island for one of the best!

There's an easy to pass entry kiosk right in front of the lot.

Head to Falmouth to visit this fun island that isn't actually an island at all. You can reach it by driving down a small roadway (Andrews Avenue) from Route 1.

The island was deeded to the Maine in 1943 by Maine's governor Percival P. Baxter. The island was home to his 22-room summer house and the deed included this.

His home was eventually turned into a home for the deaf, which came with some controversy. We'll leave that out of this article, but take a look here here to learn more.

Parking here is fairly simple. There's a small lots right by the trail head. But if you see cars lined up on the road, there's a good chance the place is packed and you'll want to come back another day.

Once you're settled, the 1.5-mile loop winds all the way around the island offering views that include both forest and Casco Bay. It's absolutely beautiful any time of year.

Keep an eye out for some of the relics of the past, including the school.

And make sure you stop at the Fairy Village in the center of the island. Over the years visitors have constructed tiny homes for little fairies. The community here is always changing, so it's worth a visit every time you go.

And no matter how old you are, you'll want to aid in the construction!

Things here are beautiful year-round. Expect flowers in the spring and summer.

And crisp air, changing leaves and dewy rocks in the fall!

Mackworth Island is open from dawn to dusk. There are outhouses near the parking lot.
