The J.C. "Sonny" Gilbert Wildlife Management Area might just be the most underrated hiking spot in the state. You won’t find any paved or boardwalk trails here, instead, you’ll be met with rugged terrain and primitive trails, great for hikers looking to step up their difficulty level. There are three trails within the WMA, and each one leads you on a spectacular journey through the forest. Today we are going to take a peek at the St. Mary’s Fall Trail, a relatively easy route that’s less than two miles long and leads you to a beautiful waterfall.
The St. Mary’s Falls Trail is located on the north end of the WMA.
It’s just shy of 1.5 miles, but don’t be deceived. What this trail lacks in length, it’ll make up for in rugged terrain.
While still relatively easy compared to trails in other states, by Louisiana standards, this one is pretty unique.
The trail will lead you through the upland mixed pine hardwoods, with lovely scenic views along the way.
You'll even pass by some small waterfalls on your way to St. Mary's Falls.
When you reach St. Mary's Fall, be sure to have your camera ready!
It's not every day that your Louisiana hike will lead you to a waterfall.
Depending on recent rain, you may even be able to get behind the waterfall for a unique shot.
When it comes to waterfall hikes, there's a bit of a catch-22. To see the waterfall in full cascading glory, you'll want to time your visit around a recent rain. Unfortunately, that means that the trails are going to be a bit muddy, so be sure to wear the proper footwear. We promise it's worth it!
