Jefferson Island is one of the most underrated attractions in Louisiana. Often overshadowed by its nearby neighbor, Avery Island, Jefferson Island is only 11 miles from Tabasco’s headquarters, and it’s easy to see both in one day. Let’s take a peep at the history of Jefferson Island and what you can expect:

It all started back in 1870 when Joseph Jefferson built a hunting lodge here.

Jefferson was a popular actor who was most well-known for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle on the stage.

He played this character over 4,500 times!

That’s how the island and the house and gardens earned their names.

Tours of the home and gardens are offered daily.

You can even spend the night here at Rip Van Winkle Gardens.

The gardens are the main event.

There are 15 acres of semi-tropical gardens to explore here.

There are dozens of them roaming around the gardens. While we’re on the topic of birds, Jefferson Island is home to more than 260 species of birds, so it’s likely you’ll see several different kinds of birds on your visit. Spoonbill Roseates are the most popular, though you never know what’s going to fly by!

The views around Lake Peigneur are just mesmerizing.

In 1980, an oil rig accidentally struck the salt mine underneath Lake Peigneur, causing a massive sinkhole that swallowed 11 barges, a tugboat, the drilling platform itself, and 65 acres of the surrounding terrain. The on-site restaurant has a beautiful glassed-in porch with a fabulous view of the gardens and Lake Peigneur.
