A Short But Beautiful Hike, Rock Falls Trail Leads To A Little-Known Waterfall In Louisiana

Looking for a unique hike in Louisiana? The J.C. "Sonny" Gilbert Wildlife Management Area offers over 7,500 acres to explore, and some of the most unique hiking trails in Louisiana. These trails are a far departure from the boardwalk swamp trails that are so prevalent in the southern part of the state, in fact, they're quite the opposite! This particular trail will lead you straight to a waterfall, but not just any waterfall, the tallest waterfall in Louisiana!

When you want a challenging hike, take to the trails at the J.C. “Sonny” Gilbert Wildlife Management Area.

Here, you’ll find terrain that’s not what you’d normally think about when it comes to Louisiana hiking trails. The landscape is rugged with high ridges with drop-offs and elevations that range from 35-245 feet.

The Rock Falls Trail is about a mile long and will take you through the mixed pine and upland hardwood forest.

There actually three trails within the WMA, and each one will show you a different side of the area.

Since we're hunting waterfalls, it's a good idea to plan your hike after a rainfall.

The trail is considered easy, but you will encounter some steep parts, so be sure to wear the proper footwear.

As you get closer to the waterfall, you should start to hear it.

When Rock Falls reveals itself to you, you'll be amazed.

Louisiana isn't known for waterfalls, and this one is a beauty! It's the tallest waterfall in the state.

The 17-foot falls can be viewed from above...

...or you can hike down to the bottom and get a closer look.

Just be careful as you're walking around the waterfall, as it can be slippery. The proper footwear will be a lifesaver here!
