Out of the 21 state parks in Louisiana, few can compare to the beautiful scenery you’ll find at Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, Louisiana. With 1,299 acres to explore, you’re in for an amazing adventure when you swing by this little slice of paradise on the Vermilion River.
Known for its abundance of beautiful palmettos, this is one of the most scenic state parks in the state.
It might surprise you that this is one of the newer state parks to join the Louisiana State Park system. The park opened to the public in the fall of 2010!
Nestled along the banks of the Vermilion River, the waterfront views are one of the main attractions here.
It’s a lovely area to watch for wildlife. Alligators and turtles are the most common sightings, but if you’re really lucky you may spot some of the other local wildlife that call the area home including hogs and white-tailed deer.
Visitors to the park can take a leisurely stroll along the park’s nature trail.
The trail is just shy of a mile and will take you through canopies of Spanish moss and cypress trees, giving you a beautiful view of the river along the way.
Once you've explored the area on foot, you may be inspired to continue your exploration on the water.
Feel free to bring your own kayak or canoe, but you can also rent canoes from the park.
The park offers several options to extend your stay, including RV slots, primitive campsites, backcountry campsites, and waterfront cabins.
It's the perfect location to explore the southern side of Cajun Country, and you're just a short drive away from popular attractions like Avery Island and the Rip Van Winkle Gardens.
