Sam Houston Jones State Park Is an Underrated Louisiana Park That Will Impress You This Fall

Fall is by far the best time of year to explore the great outdoors - at least, I think so! And that’s especially true in Cajun Country, Louisiana. With cooler temperatures, fewer critters, and autumn beauty around every corner, I can’t get enough of this wonderful time of year. So, it’s time to plan a trip to see the season transform from fast-paced sunny days to peaceful, fleeting moments in nature. 

And where is the best place to see fall foliage in Louisiana? Glad you asked! Sam Houston Jones State Park in Lake Charles, of course! Featuring cypress and pine-covered woodlands, meandering waterways, and a wide variety of wildlife, this quiet haven might just be the most impressive, underrated state park in Louisiana.

Sam Houston Jones State Park made our list for under-appreciated state parks in Louisiana, but it’s the place to be. The 1,000-acre park is known for its scenic rivers, lakes, and lagoons. And it’s also home to 70 acres of longleaf pines, which were the most abundant tree species in the country. Not to mention that it’s a wonderful destination for camping, picnicking, boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, birdwatching, hiking, and mountain biking.

As you can tell, there are plenty of reasons to explore this park, and it’s amazing no matter the time of year. But there is a certain magic that happens in autumn that you don’t want to miss.   

In late October to early November, when fall is at its peak in Louisiana, Sam Houston Jones State Park is the perfect destination to kick off the vibrant season. When I go hiking, I enjoy peaceful trails with water views, and luckily, this hidden gem park has no shortage of that. Here, you’ll have access to the Calcasieu River and Indian Bayou, making this outdoor playground ideal for those who enjoy spending time on the water.

Hiking is also a delightful experience as you wander along the tranquil waterways. One of the best trails to see the beauty of the park is the eight-mile Sam Houston Jones State Park Loop. A network of trails winds through the canopy of trees with pretty views of the river. This peaceful trail is both dog and kid-friendly, so don’t leave them behind. Be sure to keep your furry pals on their leashes for this adventure. 

The trees in the woodlands come alive with bursts of golden and burnt orange leaves. If you’re lucky, you could capture some amazing pictures of the fall foliage reflecting on the river. And speaking of photography, this park is a dream come true. Whether you enjoy snapping pics of migratory birds, reptiles, or the autumn colors, you’ll have a lot of opportunities to do that here.

Other trails to soak up the best of the season include the Orange Trail and the Old Blue Trail. As you trek, you’ll encounter footbridges, wetlands, and boardwalk paths. The picnic benches along the tranquil river invite you to slow down and soak up the beauty of the season. No matter if you choose to hike, paddle, or bike, you’ll be impressed by the stunning autumn scenes around you. This park could very well be one of the best places to view fall foliage in Louisiana.

Of course, for the best experience, it makes sense to stay here overnight. I recommend that you plan ahead and book a campsite or the glamping cabin at this Louisiana state park. You can’t beat waking up to crisp autumn mornings, the chirps of songbirds, and being surrounded by vibrant fall foliage. This sounds like a dreamy adventure to me.
