The Can’t-Miss Louisiana Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Moon Seed Loop is easy enough for most ages and skill levels, showcases breathtaking views, and offers plenty of solitude. I feel that it's one of the best hikes in Louisiana, promising to satisfy your wanderlust and fill you with a sense of enchantment.

As an avid nature lover, discovering hidden gems is, in my opinion, one of the best parts of getting outdoors. Unless you’re a local, you’d never guess that one of Louisiana’s biggest cities was hiding such a beautiful secret. Tucked away in northeastern Lafayette, Acadiana Park is a 110-acre oasis filled with lush greenery and over three miles of scenic nature trails. The Moon Seed Loop is probably my favorite trail in the park, and there are several reasons why. It’s easy enough for most ages and skill levels, showcases breathtaking views, and offers plenty of solitude. I feel that it's one of the best hikes in Louisiana, promising to satisfy your wanderlust and fill you with a sense of enchantment.

Acadiana Park is such a unique place. Few people know this, but at the end of the last Ice Age, the Mississippi River strayed off-course into what is now south-central Louisiana—so right here in Lafayette! Although the River eventually righted itself, it left an indelible mark on the area, allowing for three distinct ecological systems to coexist peacefully. From floodplain to escarpment to tallgrass prairie, these habitats support a diverse array of plants and wildlife, and it’s truly incredible to see.

The Moon Seed Loop is just over four miles long and rated easy on AllTrails. It's great for kids because there’s so much to look at—from the ancient oak trees with their sprawling roots to all sorts of colorful flowers to even the occasional rabbit hopping across the path, rest assured your little adventurers will be thoroughly entertained. In addition to oaks, the landscape is also dotted with palmettos and a number of other types of trees and grasses. It's an incredibly rich display of flora and fauna with a very whimsical feel.

The surface is a mixture of dirt/gravel and elevated wooden boardwalks. I especially love the boardwalks because they provide stunning panoramic views of the lush surroundings.

Visit AllTrails for more information about the Moon Seed Loop. It's a good idea to have the app opened up while you're hiking. This particular trail is well-marked, but that isn't always the case! I recommend checking out AllTrails+ if perks like national park guides and 3D maps are up your alley.
