This Scenic Louisiana Trail Is Even Better in the Winter With Family

During the winter season, many of us enjoy activities with our families. For some, it’s seeing the dazzling holiday lights, while others prefer spending a wholesome day in a small town in Louisiana. Over the last few years, my family began a new tradition - a winter hike in a local or state park. Personally, I enjoy bundling up and snapping pics with stunning frosty scenery in the backdrop. And if we’re lucky enough to get snow, it makes the adventure even more magical.

The French Quarter River Walk was one of my most memorable winter hikes in Louisiana. Not only was the historic trail scenic, but there were lots of opportunities to snap pics along the waterway. There is also a small community park in Baton Rouge that comes alive in the colder season. During the colder months, the East Loop Trail in Forest Community Park is arguably the best scenic winter trail in Louisiana. Grab your camera (you’ll need it) for this cold-weather adventure.  

Ok, let's be honest, the Bayou State isn't a popular destination for winter hiking or hiking in general, for that matter. In fact, snow is so rare in Louisiana, especially with subtropical year-round temperatures. Don’t expect winter wonderlands here, but on those once-in-a-lifetime occurrences, winter hiking in Louisiana becomes truly magical. 

The good news? There are some amazing trails in Louisiana worth exploring. And when the weather is cold outside (or snowing), we prefer to hunker down for the season. However, a trip to Forest Community Park could be a rewarding winter adventure for the entire family. 

You’ll find this urban park in a quiet community on the southwestern corner of Baton Rouge Parish. This 116-acre playground is a popular place for families to spend the day. Featuring tennis courts, a baseball field, a dog park, a playground, and a splash pad, there are lots of activities here to keep everyone busy for several hours. And for those who enjoy fishing, you’ll be delighted to know that the lake is stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill, so don’t leave your rods at home.

Of course, there are scenic hiking trails with views of the fishing pond, too. In the winter, the trails transform into a dreamy playground. The East Loop and the Pond Trail are family-friendly treks that are great for kids, your furry best friends, and moms with strollers. Since the trails are paved, wheelchair users can also take advantage of this scenic hiking trail in Louisiana, too. 

Personally, I enjoy shorter but sweet hikes when it’s cold outside, making the hiking trails here perfect. Sure, the trails are less than a mile long, but there is so much to see along the way. The lake is obviously the highlight of this trek, especially in the winter. If Mother Nature decides to grant us snow, be prepared to be mesmerized in the best way.  

There is nothing dreamier than a waterfront hike in the colder months. It beckons you to slow down and appreciate the still moments. Be sure to stop by the fishing pier to gaze at the pond while feeling the crisp air kiss your cheeks. I don’t know about you, but spending time outdoors in the colder season always makes me feel like a kid again. And this winter, you and your entire family can create new memories while trekking through Forest Community Park.  

You’ll want to bring your camera to snap some pics for your collection. After all, you can’t allow a perfectly good winter day to go to waste without capturing some incredible moments. If you’re into birdwatching, keep an eye out for the waterfowl and wading birds during the frosty season. At this time of year, it always brings me joy to sit and watch the ducks splash and play in the water.

One of the best parts of a cold-weather hike in Forest Community Park is that you might have the trails to yourself. This means no need to rush; hikers could take their time strolling through the wooded areas and around the lake, soaking up all the gorgeous scenes. So, if you find yourself in the Baton Rouge area and need a quick outdoor adventure, add this community park to your list. Who knows, you might discover your new favorite scenic winter trail in Louisiana. And if it happens to snow, expect something magical! 

Pro Tip: The best time to visit this park for a winter hike is on a chilly January morning. Although the temps might be hovering around 40 degrees, it’s cool enough to experience the unique winter weather in Cajun country.
