Spend The Day Exploring Endless Marshes And Swamps At Louisiana’s Barataria Preserve
Barataria Preserve in Louisiana offers a perfect day of outdoor adventure with its scenic trails and abundant wildlife.
Spending time outdoors has a tremendous effect on you, both mentally and physically. Studies have shown that being outdoors can lower levels of cortisol, a hormone that’s a marker for stress, and we could all use a little less stress in our lives. When the urge to spend a little time under the sun strikes, there’s one nature preserve in Louisiana that’s perfect for a day of outdoor adventure.
Barataria Preserve is a nature preserve located in Marrero, Louisiana.
It’s part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, which oversees six different sites in the state.
Open seven days a week from dawn until dusk, the preserve is free to enter and a great activity for families with kids of all ages.
The nature trails are all relatively short (less than two miles) so you can mix and match to fit your schedule.
During your visit, you’ll traverse the boardwalk and gravel trails that wind through the preserve’s 26,000 acres of bayous, swamps, marshes, and forests.
You'll have some knock-out views along the way...
...and informational placards peppered along the trails so you can learn a little something during your adventure.
The boardwalk trails allow you to see the swamps and marshes like never before.
These are areas that you wouldn't be able to get to any other way.
It's a phenomenal spot for wildlife viewing. You never know what you'll see along the trail...
...or on it!
Remember, don't feed the local wildlife.
With views like this, you'll find it hard to leave.
There are benches located on the trail, so you can sit for a spell and take in the beauty for as long as you'd like!
Be sure to visit the park's website before visiting, as it may have trail closures due to storms or alligator nestings. If you've ever visited Barataria Preserve, share your experience with us in the comments!
