The Gorgeous, Little-Known Lake Is One Of The Most Underrated Fishing Spots In Kentucky
Home to 45 major lakes, the Bluegrass State abounds with excellent places to fish. While some fishing lakes, like Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, are more popular, others remain lesser known. I enjoy fishing and appreciate that it can bring generations together: young and old can fish alongside one another, enjoying the peaceful water and natural scenery. Nolin Lake is a beautiful, little-known lake north of Mammoth Cave National Park. The nearly 6,000-acre lake is a fantastic fishing spot in Kentucky.
The impoundment of the Nolin River formed Nolin Lake in 1963.
Nolin River Lake State Park opened for visitors in 1993. It's the largest state park in Kentucky, offering plentiful boating, hiking, birding, and camping opportunities.
The campground is open year-round and offers dozens of campsites near the lake.
Campers can access a nearby public beach and playground.
Nolin Lake has nine boat ramps and three marinas scattered throughout the waterway. Those interested can rent a boat to take out for a terrific day on the lake.
The lake is excellent for catching bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish. A recent fishing forecast predicted favorable conditions for catching catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, and white bass.
White bass, in particular, earned five out of five stars in the forecast.
The writeup predicted a large quantity of white bass between 11 and 14 inches. These fish may be found on the longer main points of Nolin Lake during the summer months.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns Nolin Lake, uses the lake for flood control.
In preparation for rainy fall and winter seasons, the corps lowers the water level each fall, and it generally reaches its lowest level by December. They raise the water level again in the spring to the desired height for summer activities.
To fish at Nolin Lake, you must have a Kentucky fishing license. Licenses may be purchased through the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. There are also regulations and size requirements for catching specific species at the lake. For instance, largemouth bass must be over 15 inches in size and are limited to six per person fishing.
