Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is an exciting and beautiful destination in Union, Kentucky.

If you enjoy visiting parks that offer plenty of history, as well as scenic trails to explore, then this is an ideal location to seek out.

When you pull into the park and drive back to the museum and visitor's center, it's easy to find the trail from there.

You can park in the lot and follow the signs to the bison, or rather to the .5-mile Bison Trace Trail.

This short and easy trail is perfect for all ages and takes you on a relaxing walk in the woods.

Aside from getting muddy after a heavy rain, this flat and shady trail is easy to explore any time of year. It's one of a few easy trails within the park, making this a great destination for families with young adventurers.

After walking along the trail for a bit, you'll come to an opening as the trail turns and runs along the fencing of a large open space.

At this point, you've reached the home of the park's bison herd and it is quite the sight to see.

These gigantic and eye-catching mammals roam throughout the field all year long.

If you happen to visit in the spring, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a baby bison or two.

Recently, in April 2020, the park welcomed two new calves to the herd.

During springtime, this rare bison herd often adds to its growing family and you can witness these incredible animals (from a safe distance) along this unique and easy hike in Kentucky.
