Kentucky Just Broke Ground On Its First New Regional Park in 25 Years

There is an abundance of national, state, and regional parks in Kentucky that create places for recreation and relaxation while providing beautiful natural surroundings, and they all are crucial in larger cities to help people relieve stress and provide some time in nature and simply have fun together. Cardinal Run Park is one such place, and new ground has just been broken on Cardinal Run Park North in Lexington, Kentucky.

Ground was just broken in October by city councilmembers, neighborhood families, Mayor Linda Gorton, and Lexington Parks & Recreation on Cardinal Run Park North which will boast 137 acres of activities and amenities.

There will be two dog parks totaling nine acres so your furry friends can cavort about and expend their boundless energy and further bond with you as you play together.

If the hiking trails in the current park are anything to go by, the two miles of natural hiking trails in the new park should be utterly gorgeous and perfect for a healthy jog or relaxed stroll.

Like the current portion of the park, this new portion is sure to be a place where you’ll get to catch a glimpse of local wildlife.

The new park will have an excellent playground to provide more space for parents to bring their kids for some outdoor play. About 900 locals participated in public engagement to provide input on what they wanted in the new park and the plan largely reflects that.

There will be four spacious multipurpose recreational fields for youth sports as well as a basketball court and six pickleball courts. It’s going to be the fifth-largest regional park in Kentucky!

Lexington locals are sure to enjoy this wonderful new park for generations to come. Since it’s being built in accordance with their input, it’s going to be a very welcome addition to this city’s beauty and charm.

$10.1 million in federal American Rescue Plan funds were allocated for this new park. It will be situated across Parkers Mill Road from Cardinal Run South. Combined with Cardinal Run Park South, the two parks will total 192.2 acres, providing ample space for locals to enjoy time together in the beautiful city of Lexington.
