The Magical Place In Kansas Where You Can View A Wild Bison Herd

Sandsage Bison Range in Kansas offers tours to see a historic herd of American bison and seasonal wildflowers.

Do you know what our state mammal is? American bison, known as bison bison scientifically, are the largest animal mascot of Kansas. In addition to sunflowers, you used to find these guys on every prairie they could live on. Today, wild herds are protected and kept a close eye on for education programs. Enjoy every bit of these majestic wild bison on a safe tour through this bison range protecting a wild herd. Plus, there's wildflowers here to see too!

Welcome to Sandsage Bison Range, a beautiful area of Kansas that's made up of sandsage prairie, a unique area of Kansas that's being preserved by organizations like this.

The range itself consists of 3,760 acres of sandsage prairie, full of wildflowers in every season, and also a few guests that have been here for ages.

That's right! This buffalo herd has been here as long as many of us can remember, and it's also the oldest publicly owned bison herd in Kansas, having been here since the 1920s.

On tour days, you can head out in this little trolley to see all the types of wildflowers, wildlife, and bison they have here.

You're kept in the trolley for both your and the bison's safety, but you get a great view even though it looks like you're pretty far off.

In calving season, you even get to see the baby bison roaming around with the herd. Let me tell you, they're the best part!
