Kansas in the spring is a wonderful sight that definitely shouldn't be missed. Everything from flowers to waterfalls comes alive to make our state so much more beautiful than just fields and skies. However, some areas are so beautiful, it almost feels like you've wandered out of state to another place that's simply stunning. This surreal state park in Kansas is one of those places, and we think you'll love exploring it.
This gorgeous scene belongs to Kanopolis State Park, an area of Kansas nature that we're all falling in love with.
There's just something about this scene that makes me feel like I'm in another world. This 22,000 acre park is more than enough for a full day of exploration and outdoor fun.
Aside from the lush grasses and wildflowers, you'll find so much here to love.
There's a reservoir, plenty of wildlife, desert plants, and plenty of sandstone canyons to explore in every direction.
Some of those sandstone formations even hold caves within, but do you dare to explore them?
Other than a couple critters, these sandstone caves are smooth and worn from years of adventurers like you climbing inside. Well, adventurers and water.
They're big enough for you to fit inside, if you lay on your stomach.
But you won't find me climbing in there. I think a flashlight and a photo will do just fine.
Sometimes the growth here gets a little out of control, but it just makes it even more surreal.
It seems like there are no flat grasslands, empty dry areas, or anything that you'd find around Kansas normally. Instead, you get to see the surreal Smoky Hills area of Kansas; one of our most beautiful regions.
Another cave here is popular with visitors, covered in carvings and worn into a slide form from plenty of climbers.
It's a great place to take photos and enjoy the smooth sandstone surrounding you.
You can even enjoy a waterfall below the spillway if it's rained recently.
If it's recently rained a bit, make sure to check out the spillway for a bit of relaxing water rushing by. Who doesn't love a good waterfall?
Altogether, it's a magical place that's just waiting to be explored.
It's not something you should pass up, so make sure to add it to your bucket list and give it a look next time you're ready for a road trip.
Kanopolis State Park is located near Ellsworth, between Great Bend and Salina in central Kansas. Happy trails!
If you're looking for a nature adventure with fewer bugs and walking, you'll love this garden that might be the most beautiful in Kansas.
