There's a lot of travel plans on our bucket lists by now, so when we're headed around Kansas, we often try to lump multiple attractions into one trip to save time and gas. This scenic drive isn't long but definitely makes for plenty of great time spent in the great outdoors. Let's check out what it has to offer!
Hello and welcome to the Post Rock Scenic Byway, a beautiful drive that doesn't take long — unless you're like me and keep stopping for gorgeous views.
In the plains of Kansas, there aren't many trees, and that has been a fact for a good while. When settlers were marking land and needed materials for fences, trees weren't really an option, and these quarried stone posts became commonplace in the area.
For the most part, all of the stone posts will be here for years, as long as the land doesn't change uses.
If you're lucky, you'll spot one of the rare carved posts that are just gorgeous no matter which subject has been carved into these posts. This is art that should last more than a lifetime.
There are only a few, so keep your eyes peeled for when the posts look smoother and a little more clean, you may spot a diamond in the rough.
In addition to beautiful carvings, you'll sometimes find engraved posts from pioneer days, where some of the original posts were placed as people marked their land and built their fences. They look much older and worn by dirt, wind, and rain.
As always, feel free to explore both towns this byway travels to, and enjoy a Kansas sunset while you're out and about. History, creativity, and natural Kansas landscapes come together for one of the best trips ever.
