The One Spot In Kansas That’s Basically Heaven On Earth

Contrary to popular belief (mostly from those who have never stepped foot in our gorgeous state), Kansas is home to several beautiful areas that vary from colorful hills to rocky canyons all the way to crystal clear lakes and waterfalls. While there are many lovely and tranquil spots that make for an ideal oasis, our favorite has to be this eastern Kansas wetland that comes to life at the end of each day.

Located south of Lawrence, the Haskell-Baker Wetlands is a nature preserve that is managed by Baker University, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, KU, and Haskell Indian Nations University.

Originally used for agriculture and farming purposes, the wetlands were purchased by Haskell University in the 1960s as a means of teaching students self-sustaining farming practices.

Today this National Natural Landmark is home to nearly 1,000 species of plants, animals, and birds, and offers visitors a unique and scenic place to walk, sight wildlife, and enjoy the great outdoors.
