The Sunflower State is a rural place, with rolling fields of vibrant crops and wide open spaces. This bustling agriculture also means there's a prime activity during summer: visiting U-pick berry farms in Kansas. There's something so magical about picking fresh berries for yourself and your family, and spending time outdoors with the sun shining on your face. Plus, the produce will likely be much fresher and tastier than in the grocery stores!

One of our favorite U-pick farms in Kansas has to be Gieringer's Family Farm in Edgerton. It's the perfect place to take the whole family on a hot summer day, or during the fall to enjoy the pumpkin patches and other festive activities. Ready to learn more about this charming orchard? Here's what to know before you go.

What Makes This Kansas Farm So Unique

Gieringer's Family Farm is a family-owned orchard located in Johnson County. The farm was started in 2001 by Frank and Melanie Gieringer, who have greatly expanded the business ever since. You may now even see some of Gieringer's produce at farmers' markets throughout the state!

So many different kinds of fruits and veggies are grown here year-round, with plants maturing at varying times. You can pick strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and peaches in the summertime, or apples and pumpkins in the fall. But the farm also sells a variety of pre-picked veggies, too.

This charming Kansas farm is also super family-friendly. Kids can enjoy truck slides, rat racers, a hay mountain, and more when they visit. Plus, the farm frequently hosts festivals, including the annual fall festival with a pumpkin patch and corn maze, and special family days. Meaning, everyone can get in on the fun.

The Best Time to Visit for Ripe Berries

Berry season in Kansas typically runs from May to July, depending on the type you're harvesting and how harsh the weather conditions were in the prior months. At Gieringer's, strawberries peak in May, blueberries in June, and blackberries in mid-to-late June and July.

U-pick hours and days will vary depending on how much supply is left; check out the farm's Facebook page for frequent updates. Also, visiting first thing in the morning can help you avoid picked-over crops.

If U-pick isn't your style, the farm also sells pre-picked containers of each berry at the farmstand and at local farmers' markets each season.

What to Expect When You Go

Once you arrive at this beautiful Kansas farm, you'll be greeted by a bunch of friendly farmers and staff. Pay the $4/person acess fee for the U-pick experience, pick up containers provided by the farm to gather your harvest, and then head to the fields.

As you stroll through the rows of stunning wildflowers, berry bushes, and even unripe apple orchards (they peak during fall), wafts of sweet fruity scents will fill the air. The kiddos will love frolicking and playing through the fields—just make sure they are well-supervised.

After spending time picking, head inside to have your treasure weighed. Strawberries are $5.09 per pound, though other produce prices may vary. Be sure to peruse the market shelves, too. We absolutely love their selection of delicious jams, homemade desserts, and local goodies for purchase.

Sometimes, the farm can get crowded, especially if there's a fall field trip or birthday party. So keep this in mind if you're hoping to enjoy a quieter Kansas orchard day trip.

Tips for Planning Your Visit to This Kansas Farm

First things first, try to plan your visit around special events. If you've never been to pick your own fruit farms in Kansas, know that many host amazing annual festivals in the fall and spring. Gieringer's, for example, has a super fun butterfly festival every fall (2026 dates TBD). But the farm also holds fall season celebrations; stay tuned for upcoming dates.

If you're only going for berry picking, call ahead or check the farm's Facebook page to see if U-pick is available. Make sure to bring extra cash or a credit card with you to pay for admission, parking, and any other purchases.

Lastly, make sure you have clear directions to get there, along with summertime essentials like water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and breathable clothes. Have a plan for what you'll do after, as there are many fun attractions in Edgerton to explore.

Have you visited Gieringer's Family Farm before? If not, consider this your sign to plan a summer berry picking trip!
