We Love Our National Parks, but This Iowa Park Is Just as Fun
From historic structures to criminal hideaways, Wapsipinicon State Park in Iowa is worth a visit.
As a well-traveled Midwestern girl, I still love exploring my region. My adventurous itch loves the heartland of America, and Iowa is no exception. Whether you're a lifelong resident of the Hawkeye State, traveling to visit your college student, or passing through on a road trip to the West Coast, Wapsipinicon State Park is worth your time. This Iowa state park offers a variety of activities that are perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
Located about an hour's drive from the University of Iowa, the park sits on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River. You'll find three miles of multi-use trails, including the popular Wapsipinicon State Park Loop Trail. This 1.4-mile trail is relatively flat and takes hikers along the river, through the prairie, and into the woods. It's a popular trail with bikers, birders, and cross-country skiers, as well.
As the name suggests, the short out-and-back Horse Thief Cave and Ice Cave Trails take visitors to two caves. Local legend suggests that Horse Thief Cave earned its name from livestock rustlers who used this cave as a hideout. The Ice Cave got its name from how chilly it gets inside. Earlier, both caves were used as shelters by prehistoric Native peoples.
Fishing is another popular pastime at Wapsipinicon State Park. Anglers can expect to find walleye, flathead catfish, spring crappies, bullheads, and smallmouth bass. A boat ramp is located near the entrance of the park. Kayaking and paddleboarding are other activities that you can enjoy on the languid Wapsipinicon River, which (aptly) runs through the park. Interestingly, it's even possible to golf in the park. How often does that happen? If you're looking to get on the green during your state park adventure, the Wapsipinicon Country Club offers a 9-hole course.
Wapsipinicon State Park provides a well-shaded campground that's particularly well-suited for large gatherings. Both electric and non-electric campsites are available. Plus, there are full hook-up campsites for anyone traveling with an RV. Restrooms and a showerhouse are available. As these sites can fill up quickly, it's best to make reservations in advance. If you're considering places to host an event, the Dutch Creek and Playground Shelters are available to rent.
Interestingly, inmates at the Anamosa State Penitentiary built most of the park's features in the early 1920s. These include features like the stone arch bridges and many of the shelters that still stand today. This deep history earned Wapsipinicon State Park a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, visitors can experience the park and learn about its unique past through interpretive displays.
While this 394-acre state park may seem small compared to many of our great national parks, it's jam-packed with plenty of activities and amenities for a memorable Iowa day trip. As you explore, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like deer, foxes, and eagles. What other state parks should be on our Iowa list? Let us know by filling out our nomination form.
