Iowa is full of gorgeous scenery that's worth visiting in all seasons! Our beautiful state is absolutely stunning in the fall, but you can't see the best of it from the roads. Lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails to see the best of the Hawkeye State.
1. Pikes Peak State Park
Pikes Peak is home to several short hikes that lead to panoramic views of the Mississippi River Valley. The Pikes Peak Overlook trail is accessible right from the parking lot, and other short trails will take you to more expansive views.
2. Ledges State Park
Ledges State Park is home to two short trails that you'll fall in love with: the Crow's Nest Trail and the Table Rock/Inspiration Point. The unique geography of Ledges State Park makes the hikes to the overlooks just as impressive as the views from the top.
3. Backbone State Park
Backbone State Park is Iowa's oldest state park, and you can find one of Iowa's castles right by the lake! This historic building is worth checking out as you take in the sweeping views from the shoreline.
4. Lake MacBride State Park
Lake MacBride's trails take you to a stunning waterfall from the lake itself. Each side trail along the way takes you to a beautiful waterfront vista.
5. Wapsipinicon State Park
Wapsipinicon is a historic riverfront state park that's home to several great fall hikes in Iowa. After you hike to the historic truss bridge, head to the General Store Pub just a short drive from the park, which also features a beautiful river view.
6. Waubonsie State Park
Waubonsie State Park is tucked away in the Loess Hills, where you'll find some of the most unique scenery in Iowa. The views of the Missouri River Valley will impress everyone who's ever thought Iowa was a flat, flyover state.
7. Mines of Spain Recreation Area
Mines of Spain Recreation Area is a preserved park that was the first area of Iowa settled by Europeans. Julien Dubuque, the fur trapper who founded Iowa's first city, is buried at the top of the cliffs. The monument is a sight to see, and the views of the river are always impressive.
8. Bellevue State Park
Bellevue State Park is one of the most beautiful fall hikes in Iowa. The views from the crest of the park show off the river and the town, and you can see gorgeous fall foliage for miles.
Have you thought about planning a fall hike in Iowa before winter rolls in? Any of the above hikes are perfect... but if the weather doesn't cooperate, you can still see our pretty state! Try hitting the road for This Underappreciated Scenic Drive through paradise.
