The Recent Record-Breaking Snow Storm Proves That Winter Has Officially Hit In Iowa

Did you wake up to a blanket of snow on Veterans Day? You weren't alone! Much of Iowa experienced record-breaking snowfall during the first winter storm of the season. Now that we've had some snow, we can really start to look forward to winter in Iowa!

The Iowa countryside was blanketed with some early season snow on November 11th, 2019. In many cities, the snowfall amounts were a record-breaking.

In Des Moines, the previous November 11 snowfall record of 1.5" was crushed by 8:30 a.m., when the airport registered 2.9" of fresh snow. The new record eclipses a 79-year-old mark.

In Ames, 4.5 inches of snow disrupted classes at Iowa State and caught many students and professors by surprise. This was the first snowfall of the 2019-2020 winter season, even though it's technically still fall!

Areas northeast of the capital recieved the most snow, with Cedar Rapids noting a total accumulation of 5.8 inches. That's enough snow to go sledding!

More snow continued to fall throughout the week, dropping 3 inches of snow along the Mississippi River towns of Dubuque, Marquette and Anamosa.

Though many people believe Iowa is at its most beautiful when snow falls on the countryside or in our towns and cities, others are dreading a dark and chilly season.
