Iowa has some of nature's most beautiful and magical caves. From the deep, dark caverns full of stalagmites, to the narrow caves with winding bodies of water flowing through them, each one is its own subterranean paradise.  When you enter these 9 caves in Iowa, you will feel like you are entering a completely different world.

1. Maquoketa Caves

The caves at Maquoketa Caves State Park are by far the most popular caves in Iowa, and for good reason - they are absolutely breathtaking!

2. Decorah Ice Cave

This cave in Decorah is frozen all year round, due to the glacier it sits on, making it a great place to stay cool on a hot summer day!

3. Starr's Cave

Starr's Cave in Burlington is dark, cavernous, and home to many bats. Speaking of the bats, this cave is currently closed to prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome within the bat population.

4. Cave at Backbone State Park

This cave at Backbone State Park is just one of the many beautiful pieces of nature you can find in the area.

5. Horse Thief Cave

Horse Thief Cave in Wapello County is about 45 minutes away from Maquoketa Caves, making it a perfect second stop on your cave touring trip!

6. Ice Cave at Wapsipinicon

This cave at Wapsipinicon State Park in Animosa is just as beautiful as the rest of the area. When you're done checking out the cave, take a hike on the trails or have a picnic in one of the covered shelters.

7. Spook Cave

Spook Cave in McGregor offers underground boat tours through the cave, starting above ground at the base of the 90 foot bluffs and going through a series of dark tunnels.

8. Ice Cave at Bixby State Preserve

Another of Iowa's ice caves, this one is located at Bixby State Preserve in Clayton County. Doesn't it look like the perfect home for a little leprechaun?

9. Crystal Lake Cave

Crystal Lake Cave in Dubuque is easily the most magical of all of the caves in Iowa. There is also a newly added gem mining sluice to keep the kids busy.
