Originally called Quick Creek Reservoir, this massive lake is actually the smallest reservoir in Indiana.
At 741 acres in size, this reservoir is pretty impressive.
In addition to being the smallest reservoir managed by the state, it's the only one not created for flood control. It was created in 1970 as a stable source of water and upon its creation, it was celebrated for its commuter-friendly location.
And the surrounding property, which consists of 2,178 acres, is a haven for local flora and fauna.
Hardy Lake State Recreational Area is also home to the Dwight Chamberlain Raptor Center. The Raptor Center cares for injured and orphaned birds and, though it is not regularly open to the public, it's fascinating to know that this landscape serves such an essential purpose. Plus, you might even spot a few raptors during your own adventures around the Lake!
The landscape has a few secrets of its own, too.
As you hike through Hardy Lake State Recreational Area, you'll find a number of trails, including the Island Trail, Honeysuckle Trail, Lakeside Trail, and the Cemetery Trail. The latter actually passes by a quaint family cemetery with historic headstones. The trails, altogether, total at just a few miles of hiking.
