Fort Harrison State Park is a 1,700-acre piece of paradise near Indianapolis.
Hidden in the state park is the Lawrence Creek Trail, a 4.5-mile trek through truly pristine forest that's unlike anything you think you'd find in Indiana.
All around you is the sound of birds, the chattering of critters, and the occasional dragonfly.
It's a popular trail, particularly among mountain bikers, so make sure to be aware of your surroundings and don't get run over (I do not recommend this... based on experience).
There's something truly cathartic about an old-fashioned hike through the woods.
Wear good shoes, and be cautious if there's been recent rainfall - the trail can get a bit muddy if there's any water around. I also recommend the use of bug spray, as this is a legitimate woodland hike and there are definitely insects, some of whom enjoy a human snack.
Along the way, you'll explore ravines, woods, paved sections, dirt sections, and everything in between.
The best seasons to hike this trail are spring, summer, and fall - during the fall, it's particularly breathtaking as all the trees come ablaze with vibrant color.
It is open year-round, though, so if you feel the urge to have a winter hike around these parts, you're in luck.
Every season brings with it good reasons to come back out, so don't be a stranger! There's the amazing color in the fall, the beauty of life bursting back through the ice in the spring, and, of course, awesome summertime wildflowers. Winter brings with it peace and quiet, as most folks will come out during the warmer months but not then.
You'll be amazed at the awesome diversity of Indiana's woods and forest, perfectly illustrated in this hike.
