The Kankakee Fish And Wildlife Area Trail In Indiana Is A Magical Hidden Gem Worth Exploring

Fun fact: there are well over 1,000 amazing hiking trails in Indiana. With so many to choose from, it's easy to see how many get overlooked; personally, I'm always looking for the trails less traveled. The misfits. The hidden gems. The one I found today is amazing because I can't believe we've never covered it - it's a gorgeous little trail on a hidden nature preserve even the locals may not know about. For this alone, I think it's the best hike near Hanna, Indiana, and it's got a lot to offer. Let's check it out!

On west Toto Road in North Judson is just under 4,200 acres of land known as the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area.

It's a wonderful place to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors without straying too far from civilization.

Within the preserve are numerous amazing sights to see and explore.

These include open water in the form of lakes and ponds, marshes, riparian timber, periodically flooded crop fields, and 11 miles of pristine river you'll be ever-so-tempted to dip your toes into.

Best of all, it's always open - and it's one of the best places for hunters in the entire Hoosier State.

Overall, honestly, it's an excellent hike through an excellent preserve with an excellent selection of options no matter what your outdoor flavor of choice might be.

The loop trail is 4.3 miles long, and fairly easy.

Sometimes, it can be a little muddy - especially after rain or during snowmelt. Always dress for the temperature AND the ground conditions - hiking in the cold with wet boots is no fun!

Speaking of the cold, not even winter slows this place down.

You'll find all sorts of critters calling this place home - and plenty of migrating ones just visiting for a spell.

No matter the season, you'll always find peace and quiet on the Kankakee Fish Loop.

It's a little slice of paradise right here in the Hoosier State.
