If you're an Idahoan, chances are you've witnessed the epic beauty that is Shoshone Falls. This waterfall is one of Idaho's most iconic sights. Located in Twin Falls, this is an incredibly popular attraction during spring and summer. Everybody knows that the falls aren't nearly as majestic during the winter. However, something incredibly weird is happening with the waterfall this year.
Shoshone Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Idaho during the spring and summer months when the water is cascading at full force.
The incredible sight of the 212-foot high falls is a must for every Idahoan!
It's well known that the falls become barren during the winter months. The water is held back and usually isn't released until April for irrigation purposes.
The rocky bluffs are still gorgeous, even without the cascades of water flowing down them. However, it really isn't quite the same...
But wait, there is good news for waterfall-lovers this winter! Shoshone Falls is experiencing substantial flowing waters that are unlike any we've seen during this time of year.
Water flows of up to 5,000 cubic feet per second is estimated to be pouring down the waterfall for the rest of the month. The unexpected flow of water is the result of water being released from the Upper Snake River reservoirs located upstream.
What's being referred to as an "early Christmas gift" for Idahoans combines two amazing things we love: snow and waterfalls!
There's nothing like the sight of a light sprinkling of snow over the Snake River Canyon. This place truly is an unparalleled sight all year long.
A small park is located nearby where you can observe the epic falls from several viewing platforms.
Can you imagine getting that perfect picture of the waterfall flowing among some amazing winter scenery? Talk about postcard worthy! It's almost like a Christmas miracle has taken place.
While you're here, be sure to take a nice, lengthy walk along the beautiful trail which goes along the rim of the Snake River Canyon. Just keep in mind to dress warm and be careful of slippery areas.
With Shoshone Falls roaring with gusto and force, this may just be the best December ever. Be sure to plan out a short day trip to Twin Falls to witness this incredibly unique sight. There's no telling when this sort of thing will happen again.
Do you think you'll go see Shoshone Falls this winter? It certainly looks incredible! While you're at it, check out the nearby City Of Waterfalls That'll Take Your Breath Away.
