Kootenai Wildlife Refuge is one of Idaho's best kept secrets. Located near Bonners Ferry, the refuge is a magnificent spot loaded with beautiful scenery and an abundance of wildlife. It's also here that you'll find the elusive but incredible Myrtle Falls.
Myrtle Falls is the only waterfall that can be viewed from one of the refuge's hiking trails. A brief, quarter-mile hiking trail leads you along Myrtle Creek to the perfect vantage point of this impressive waterfall.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. The Myrtle Falls Trailhead can be found just opposite from the Refuge Office on the Auto Trail Road. The trail is ADA-accessible up to the point of where you'll reach an awesome little footbridge that crosses the creek.
Here you can stop for a moment and just take in the beautiful sights. Forestry surrounds you from all sides and there's nothing but the sound of the creek below to disturb you. The Refuge is just that—an escape from the chaos of civilization.
The trail becomes primitive past the bridge but it's still very manageable. A small fence lines the trail, telling you where to go. There are some steep sections throughout the trail but it isn't long before you reach the overlook for the waterfall.
The observation point is the perfect place to view Myrtle Falls. The waterfall is almost hidden by towering pine trees but there's no denying just how incredible the falls are. At approximately 100 feet high, the falls are definitely notable.
The waterfall is especially impressive when the run-off is high and the cascades of water are spectacularly abundant. Myrtle Falls definitely proves itself to be a hidden waterfall that is well-worth going out of your way for.
