The 10-mile-wide Hells Canyon on Idaho's western border is a mesmerizing natural wonder that photographs simply can't do justice. As the deepest river gorge in North America, it should most definitely be considered a bucket list destination for any Idaho adventurer. There are obviously a ton of great ways to explore this massive canyon, but for a quick view that promises to knock your socks off, the Hells Canyon Overlook is a great option. You will have to dip across the Oregon border to visit this destination, but trust us—the view is worth it.
Situated just across the border in Imnaha, Oregon, the Hells Canyon Overlook is the ideal spot to soak up tremendous views of the canyon's mesmerizing scenery.
Located along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, the overlook is a popular stop for travelers passing by. Finding the overlook is relatively simple and there are no fees or passes required to visit it. You can find detailed directions to the overlook through the Forest Service website.
The overlook site is downright stunning. Complete with interpretive signs, paved parking areas, vault toilets, and picnic areas, it's the perfect place to enjoy with family or by yourself—whether you're stopping by for just a quick minute or a bigger adventure.
From the overlook, visitors can enjoy a fantastic view of not just the canyon itself but the spectacular scenery that surrounds it. Both McGraw Creek and Idaho's Seven Devil Mountains are visible from the canyon's rim.
In spring and summer, the area is rich with lush foliage and colorful wildflowers. The area's paved pathways are great for exploring the area further. Be sure to bring your binoculars and keep an eye out for wildlife!
Boasting nearly 8,000-feet in depth, Hells Canyon is even deeper than the much more popular Grand Canyon. Seeing its steep canyon walls from above like this really gives you an idea of the canyon's grandeur. It's truly unlike anything else in Idaho!
We may share it with Oregon (and Washington), but we consider ourselves tremendously lucky to live in such close proximity to this grand natural wonder. Check out this dreamy view of the canyon scenery and plan a field trip to Hells Canyon Overlook.
