September is finally here and that means it's time to bust out the cozy sweaters, spiced lattes, and apple-scented candles. But most importantly, it means that the Gem State is about to go through an incredible transformation featuring vibrant shades of autumn colors. It's a time of year that nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts relish. So when can we expect Idaho's fall foliage to look its very best? Check out the following predictions to find out when the best time is for viewing this epic array of colors.
Autumn is an awesome time to go exploring in the Gem State. The weather is perfect and most importantly, the fall foliage is stunning. Thanks to this handy-dandy tool courtesy of Smoky Mountains, you can plan your fall adventure perfectly around the peak time for Idaho's fall foliage.
This 2018 Fall Foliage Map shows exactly when and where the best fall colors will occur nationwide. Although no prediction tool is 100% accurate, plenty of adventurers rely on this map for planning their autumn explorations.
By dragging the date forward on the map, you can get an idea of how the leaves will change in our state. As you can see in the map below, much of Idaho will be at "partial peak" in early October, with just the northern and eastern borders of the state at "near peak".
By October 22nd, it's expected that the majority of Idaho's fall foliage will be at ultimate peak, with the northern and eastern borders past their peak. This means your window for viewing fall foliage should be in between early and late October.
The southwestern corner of Idaho will experience peak foliage last, around October 29th. By this time, the rest of the state will be past peak.
These predictions are based on the weather patterns that have occurred throughout the year. Precipitation patterns and weather can give us a good idea of the brightness and length of the fall colors.
