Hike Through a Botanical Paradise in Hawaii for an Unforgettable Adventure
Lace up your hiking boots and go on an unforgettable adventure through the rainforest in Kauai on the Kuilau Ridge Trail.
If you are like me, I love to spend time outdoors. I love exploring and visiting somewhere new. On the Hawaiian Islands, there are dozens of incredible places for time outside like the state’s beautiful waterfalls and beaches. And while these natural features certainly impress me, I love to lace up my hiking boots and go on a hike. Located in the Lihu’e-Koloa Forest Reserve in Kauai is one hiking trail that provides an unforgettable adventure — the Kuilau Ridge Trail. This hike has so much to love including gorgeous mountain and valley views, streams, wooden footbridges, and more. It’s truly an unforgettable adventure.
The Keahua Arobretum is a true botanical paradise in Kapa’a, Hawaii. This destination is a hidden gem where you can stroll through native Hawaiian plants and trees. It’s the type of place where you can find solitude, meditate, observe wildlife, and also access the Kuilau Ridge Trail.
After you spend some time exploring the Keahua Arboretum, grab your hiking gear and hop on the Kuilau Ridge Trail. You’ll find the trailhead near a small parking area at the arboretum. If the parking lot near this trailhead is full, you can find other parking areas further along the road, just be prepared for a longer walk.
The Kuilau Ridge Trail is a hike the entire family can do. However, there are some difficult areas of the trail where small feet may need a little extra help. Each way, the trail is approximately 2 miles but your route is well-maintained and easy to follow, allowing you to focus on the natural beauty surrounding you.
As you begin, you’ll actually follow an old road. This road eventually turns into a narrow trail that will connect with the Moalepe Trail. We recommend downloading a map of your route to ensure you stay on track and don’t become lost as there are several trails that branch off the main trail.
However, it may not be a bad thing to hike even further into this area as there is no better way to describe it than absolute pure beauty.
As you hike, you’ll enjoy views of the Makaleha Mountains and the Kauai rainforest. You’ll walk under canopies of trees and near stunning flowers and other vegetation.
As you continue along the trail, you’ll walk over a wooden footbridge and will see small streams. I recommend you stop at several areas to not only catch your breath and have a few snacks but to also admire the views surrounding you. This is such a stunning area on Kauai that you don’t want to miss any of it.
And to ensure you have an incredible time on this trail, come fully prepared. It is important to carry water with you and take sips often. Always check the weather before you venture into the Kauai rainforest and wear proper footwear and clothing. A light jacket is always recommended as well as sun protection.
The Kuilau Ridge Trail is short and not too difficult. It is full of pure beauty everywhere you look. From mountain views to footbridges, it’s an adventure that you’ll never want to forget. In fact, don’t be surprised if this becomes one of your favorite trails on the Hawaiian Islands.
