These Secret Swimming Holes Hidden In The Hawaiian Forest Are Sure To Dazzle You
Maui’s Hana Highway offers a scenic drive leading to hidden waterfall swimming holes in a bamboo forest.
Maui’s Hana Highway is perhaps the most popular scenic drive on the island — and possibly all of Hawaii. This infamous 64.4-mile drive that stretches from Kahului to Hana is popular not for the destination — Hana Town — but for the incredible journey it takes to get there and the natural wonders you’ll find along the way. While many of the stops are overcrowded with tourists, the road to Hana leads to four swimming holes you’ll find hidden in a bamboo forest. These are some of the best swimming homes in Maui, and you might even have them all to yourself.
Because this incredible destination is stream-fed, it is important to issue a friendly warning about the risks associated with flash flooding, and leptospirosis bacteria found in many of Hawaii’s natural pools. It is advised that you check weather reports and ocean conditions before heading out for the day, never swim in these pools when you have open wounds, and to always watch your step. With that warning out of the way, let’s dive in!
There’s really no telling how many spring-fed pools you’ll find hidden within this bamboo forest, and that’s part of the adventure. Known as Na'Ili'Ili Haele, this dreamy destination is home to not one or two waterfall swimming holes, but more than four.
Your journey will begin at the road, where you will have to find an opening in the thick bamboo and follow along a makeshift trail through the mud and bamboo until you reach the stream.
As you hike, you will be rewarded with a string of waterfalls and pools to admire, photograph, and even splash around in. The first few waterfalls are typically within easy reach of most hikers, but extreme outdoor enthusiasts will find more.
Along the way, you’ll need to hop across irrigation ditches and the stream, and the path is often slippery with mud. Each subsequent pool is harder and harder to reach, so please be careful and know your limits.
If you’re not used to waterfall hikes, Na'Ili'Ili Haele can be tricky. So you don’t wind up wandering aimlessly through bamboo forests that seemingly lead to nowhere, it’s important to remember that you’ll find these dazzling waterfalls along the stream. (We know, obvious, right?)
Located on property owned by the East Maui Irrigation Company, this little-known natural oasis is well loved by locals and tourists alike. And while many outdoor enthusiasts act as though there is an implied easement to use these trails after years of hiking here, you are advised to get permission from EMI.
Waterfall swimming holes are a dime a dozen along the Road to Hana, and while tourists will often have an easier time exploring the more well-known options, Na'Ili'Ili Haele is quite alluring for anyone hoping to get off the beaten path.
This stunning natural oasis is located at 8310 Hana Hwy., Haiku, HI 96708. Have experienced these hidden swimming holes along the road to Hana for yourself?
