One of Hawaii’s Most Lush and Scenic Jungle Hikes
The views along this trail will inspire and amaze.
Whenever I visit any Hawaiian island, you will find a hike on my itinerary. I believe that the Aloha State is home to some of the most unforgettable and bucket-list-worthy trails in the U.S. One of these trails is located near Kapa’a, Kauai — the Moalepe Trail. This is an out-and-back trail that has some challenges, but the views are extraordinary, and you’ll encounter a little bit of everything — ocean views, jungle, wildlife, and more.
For an adventure on Kauai that you won’t forget, lace up your hiking boots and head to the Moalepe Trail. Located on the eastern side of Kauai in the Lihu’e-Koloa Forest Reserve, this trail is a gorgeous adventure. Just make sure you are prepared for some physical and mental challenges — this isn’t going to be an easy and casual stroll. Also keep mind that this trail is shared with mountain bikers and horseback riders. Dogs are also welcome on this journey.
In fact, the Moalepe Trail is an out-and-back trail that is 5.1 miles long. Be prepared to take plenty of breaks as you’ll encounter several inclines on your journey. In total, you will climb more than 750 feet in elevation. This area is also quite rainy, so you can expect muddy portions and even potential rainstorms along your way. We recommend packing extra clothing and hiking boots if possible.
However, no matter what obstacles you may encounter along your way, the views make it worth the journey. During the first portion of your hike, look out and enjoy the gorgeous ocean views, as well as the Anahola Mountains and the Makaleha Mountains.
As you continue, you’ll walk through a lush, thick jungle filled with native trees and other vegetation. Don’t be surprised if you feel disconnected from the hustle and bustle of the world as you make your way through this green, beautiful landscape. Be quiet as you walk and listen to the birds singing and the leaves rustling. There’s nothing quite like the sounds of nature to soothe your soul.
Once you reach the end of the Moalepe Trail, there is no major overlook or breathtaking vista to wow you. Rather, you will find a sign telling you that you’ve reached the end of your climb. However, the trail continues onward and becomes the Kuilau Ridge Trail, which will lead you right to the Keahua Arboretum. This arboretum is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including eucalyptus trees and even exotic mango trees.
The Moalepe Trail is a hike on Kauai that features a little bit of everything — inclines, ocean views, and quiet. It’s a jungle hike that we recommend every outdoor lover explore. It’s a beautiful way to spend a day on Kauai.
