The Forest Trail In Hawaii That Will Transport You Far Away From The Islands

The Kahakapao Loop Trail in Hawaii's Makawao Forest Reserve offers a serene and cool hiking experience through diverse forests, ideal for both hikers and mountain bikers.

From waterfall hikes to boardwalk trails and everything in between, Hawaii is home to some of America's best hiking trails and we love nothing more than exploring our beautiful state on foot. With miles and miles of trails that ascend mountains, traverse ridgelines, and lead to breathtaking natural beauty, Hawaii is truly a hiker’s paradise, especially when it comes to forest trails. But not all trails are created equal, and this gem, though lesser-known and off-the-beaten-path, is one of our current favorites.

Found within the Makawao Forest Reserve, the Kahakapao Loop Trail winds its way through a variety of native and non-native trees, including a forest of pines, fragrant eucalyptus groves, and patches of wild ginger, as well as ash groves and fern forests.

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Haleakala at approximately 2,800 to 3,700 feet above sea level, this loop trail is cool, shaded, breezy, and serene.

Though the trail itself is perfect for hiking with your dog, it’s also one of the island’s best mountain biking destinations. You’ll find numerous trails crisscrossing the loop for mountain bikers of various skill levels, but if you want to stay on the Kahakapao Trail, follow the red arrows.

The trail is part of the Na Ala Hele trail system and is well-maintained, beautiful, and perfectly remote.

If you’re hoping to escape into nature and get away from it all, the Kahakapao is the place to go. Not only will you be transported instantly to a place reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest, but you are sure to find peace.

Wear hiking boots with good traction and be sure to dress appropriately, as it is much cooler here than near sea level. That’s why we love the Makawao Forest Reserve, though: it is a welcome refuge from Hawaii’s typical weather.

So, what are you waiting for? Though this natural oasis may not be well-known, it is quite ethereal and well-worth a visit for anyone who lives on Maui or has time to spare while visiting.
